Functions of the Board

The statutory functions of ERB are expressly provided under Section 4 of the Engineers Registration Act, Cap. 63. These functions cover registration, monitoring, enforcement, training, and international relations.

Functions of the Board

The functions of the Engineers Registration Board are expressly provided under Section 4 of the Engineers Registration Act, Cap. 63 of the Laws of Tanzania. Subject to the provisions of the Act and any regulations made thereunder, the functions of the Board are as follows:

  1. Maintain and keep a register of engineers, including consulting engineers and firms providing engineering services in Tanzania.
  2. Consider and decide on applications for registration, renewal, and upgrading of engineer and firm registration categories.
  3. Sponsor, arrange, and provide facilities for conferences, seminars, workshops, and consultations on matters related to engineering.
  4. Promote and maintain professional conduct and integrity of the engineering profession through the Code of Conduct and disciplinary proceedings.
  5. Monitor the conduct and activities of engineers, including consulting engineers and firms to ensure compliance with the Act.
  6. Arrange for the publication and dissemination of materials produced in connection with the work and activities of the Board.
  7. Certify academic awards given by training institutions for consideration in applications for engineer registration under Section 10.
  8. Plan, arrange, coordinate, and oversee the professional training of local graduate engineers through the SEAP program and SOPEL.
  9. Collaborate with the Tanzania Commission for Universities and other institutions on accreditation of programs for training of engineers.
  10. Enter and inspect sites where construction, installation, erection, renovation, maintenance, or manufacturing works are in progress to verify engineering compliance.
  11. Verify that professional standards, engineering ethics, and relevant health and safety aspects are observed on engineering projects.
  12. Enter and inspect business offices for verification purposes or for monitoring works, services, and goods rendered by engineers.
  13. Suspend or issue stop orders to works, projects, services, or engineering activities done without meeting engineering professional requirements.
  14. Take legal action against persons or firms that practice engineering in Tanzania without being registered by the Board.
  15. Establish and maintain relations with regional and international engineering regulatory bodies including through mutual recognition agreements.
  16. Advise the Government on all matters relating to engineering practice, engineering education, and the development of the engineering profession in Tanzania.

All functions listed above are exercised subject to the provisions of the Engineers Registration Act Cap. 63 and any regulations, bye-laws, or rules made thereunder. Engineers and firms are advised to familiarise themselves with the Act to understand the full scope of ERB’s regulatory authority.
