Professional Development at ERB
ERB is mandated to promote the continuous professional development of all registered engineers in Tanzania. This is achieved through three main programmes: the Structured Engineers Apprenticeship Programme (SEAP) for new graduates, the School of Professional Engineering and Leadership (SOPEL) for practising engineers, and a structured Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework.
SEAP
A structured three-year work-based learning programme for newly graduated engineers — the pathway from graduation to full professional registration.

Mandatory Continuing Professional Development requirements to ensure all registered engineers maintain and enhance their competence throughout their careers.
Learn more →CPD is Mandatory
All registered engineers must complete a minimum of 30 PDUs per year as a condition of annual Practicing License renewal. Failure to comply may result in suspension of the practising licence.
Structured Engineers Apprenticeship Programme (SEAP)
SEAP is a three-year work-based learning programme designed for newly graduated engineers. It provides a structured pathway from graduation to professional registration, ensuring graduates gain the practical competencies required for registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
Programme Objective
To guide engineering graduates through a structured period of supervised practical experience, developing the technical, professional, and ethical competencies required for full registration as a Professional Engineer with ERB.
How SEAP Works
Application & Admission
A newly graduated engineer applies for admission into SEAP using the official application form. Both the applicant and their employer (Apprenticeship Provider) must be registered with ERB.

Applicants must undergo a medical examination using the official ERB SEAP medical form before commencement of the programme.

The apprentice works under the supervision of a registered PE or CE. Progress is recorded monthly in the SEAP Logsheet, documenting competencies achieved across all required areas.

At the end of the three-year programme, ERB assesses the logsheet and portfolio. Successful candidates are invited for a competency interview for PE registration.

SOPEL — School of Professional Engineering & Leadership
SOPEL is ERB's flagship professional development platform delivering structured, high-quality training programmes to registered engineers across Tanzania. SOPEL combines online self-paced modules with facilitated in-person workshops and seminars. Completing a SOPEL module awards CPD points recorded directly in the engineer's MIS profile.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
ERB has made CPD mandatory for all practising engineers in Tanzania since 2005. CPD is defined as the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout one's working life.
Professional Development Unit (PDU)
One PDU = one contact hour of attendance or involvement in a structured CPD activity. Every practising engineer must achieve a minimum of 30 PDUs per year (90 PDUs over 3 years). ERB reviews compliance once every three years.
